Marine Beacon is an EU funded project that will address gaps in our current understanding of how fisheries bycatch impacts protected, endangered and threatened species.
The project will work with fisheries, policy and conservation stakeholders to develop and test innovative, tools and techniques for better monitoring of these important species and mitigating risks of bycatch, to ensure healthier seas and more sustainable fisheries.
You can read more about the full scope of the project at marinebeacon.eu, including about the case studies being undertaken during the project.
We will update this page with Anchor Lab's contributions to the project as they occur.
A huge congratulations to Mishel Valery Rañada (VUB-UGent-UAntwerp), whose work in Suriname used the Mofi digital logbook app, which was developed by ourselves at Anchor Lab, a Marine Beacon project partner.
Mishel has focused her work on testing digital tools for fisheries data collection, including the Mofi app. In collaboration with stakeholders in Suriname, she adapted and field-tested tools to improve self-reporting of PETS (Protected, Endangered & Threatened Species) bycatch in demersal trawl fisheries. Her research highlights the importance of engaging local communities to refine and implement effective monitoring technologies.
Mofi is a key technology within Marine Beacon’s approach to mapping and mitigating PETS fisheries interactions and bycatch in European waters.
