Estonian Environmental Board EM pilot project

AnchorLab – We are proud of being partners with Workboats Consulting involved in the fishing vessel video surveillance (CCTV) pilot project, which enables Estonian Environmental Board to monitor fishing-related activities with our specialized software. Our Black Box Video system has been successfully installed on three Estonian fishing vessels and it complies with all requirements. It is also verified by conventional monitoring methods and it shows our system is playing an important role when individual quotas are implemented.

After the initial trial process, the conclusion from Olav Avarsalu Deputy Director General of the Environment Agency, as our Black Box system is supporting and significantly strengthening control and facilitating the detection of possible violations. It also provides them with the ability to gather information about the potential, efficiency, reliability and necessity of monitoring with cameras. In the future, they are considering applying the use of remote monitoring in addition to check compliance also in long-distance fishing in more areas.

You can read more about this pilot project from Workboats Consulting website (in English) or directly from the Estonian Environmental Board’s press release: here (in Estonian).

BlackBox VX Firmware 3.4.42 is out and brings geofencing and motion detection to the table

We have just released version 3.4.42 of the BlackBox VX firmware. The update will be downloaded and installed by the systems automatically, most likely when they are in harbour next. The main features included in the release are:

  • Implementation of new Geo Fencing functionality
  • This new geofencing implementation enables systems to be configured to record, or not record, when a vessel enters a specified area. This could enable the systems to be configured to only record in certain areas, such as a specific EEZ, ICES area, MPA, etc. It also enables notification to be raised upon entering or leaving certain areas, which could be useful to aid the risk assessment of a particular trip and whether additional review of that trip may be necessary.

  • Camera as a sensor - motion detection.
  • The ability to use cameras as a sensor to detect motion within the camera's view, or a specific region of interest within the camera's view, has been added to the BlackBox VX firmware. The motion detection outputs values in a similar manner to other sensors. The display of the collected motion detection data has been integrated into the BlackBox Analyzer as part of the graph. The collected motion detection data can be exported as with other types of data.

  • Implementation of new live pings
  • A new live ping feature has been added to the BlackBox VX firmware. Initially it will run alongside the existing live ping feature, but once the new version has been fully integrated into the BlackBox Analyzer the old version of the feature will be removed. The new live ping feature enables further information to be sent along with the latest position of the system. The new live ping feature will also enable additional features (currently in development), such as email notifications of a vessel returning to harbour, as well as additional functionality to be added to the Live Map feature of the BlackBox Analyzer.

Anchor Lab is rolling out electronic monitoring to the majority of the Danish bottom trawling vessels in Kattegat

It was politically decided to introduce electronic monitoring to the majority of the Danish fishery for vessels with bottom trawling gear.

The aim is to document the Norway lobster fishery in Kattegat, including and in particular the bycatch of cod and compliance with the landing obligation. The project will provide detailed records of where each catch operation takes place to document general compliance in relation to discards of cod and other species. The reason for the special focus on cod, is due to the stock (and the quota for cod) being at a dangerously low level.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries of Denmark relased a tender in search of a REM provider to supply the monitoring systems and to aid with the monitoring program in general. Anchor Lab is happy and proud to ultimately be the one awarded the tender and look forward to be part of the Danish monitoring strategy.

The concept for the camera project is based on the European Fisheries Control Agency’s Technical guidelines and specifications for the implementation of Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) in EU Fisheries. The systems installed on the vessels will be recording the catch operation onboard using 4-5 cameras and use sensors for identifying gear operations, light conditions, and water depth. Geofencing will be used to ensure that the systems only record within the Kattegat region and all recorded video and sensor data to be reviewed, will be transmitted wirelessly and automatically over 3G/4G.
